BE STILL

  • I LOVE HAVING WRITTEN

“When someone has a gift for painting or sculpture, the road is marked, no hesitation. But when there are several strings to one’s bow, that’s almost a calamity. One is perpetually torn by one’s gifts, in a sort of civil war, threatened by dissipation, full of regret for what one might have done and did not do. Alas, even a long life is short and one must choose.”      — Brassaï

  • WHAT DOES A JEW DO
     IN JACKSON HOLE?

In Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the entire Jewish community gathers to celebrate the annual occasion of Chanukah. Each person brings their own menorah and lights every candle at once. They then eat a festive meal with brisket as the main course and lots of fried potato latkes. Their observance is not traditional, as usually one candle is lit every night and then added to on succesive nights until all eight candles are lit. This commemorates the miracle of light when the Jews recaptured the second temple in 165 BCE, finding only enough oil to burn for one day, that miraculously burned for eight days. Regardless of how Jackson Hole Jews do it, they honor the miracle and celebrate their community. In Judaism, the threads of connection are flexible but strong.
